Workshop in Maryland, Pro Photo Cover Contest, Crazy Fun Video and more....

I don't think I will be able to blog tomorrow morning.
I am driving to O'Hare airport and need to leave quite early.
You may think it is crazy to drive 125 miles to get on a plane but the flights out of
Madison had us getting on the plane at 6:00am and then sitting in Minneapolis or Detroit or Atlanta
for the whole day and not getting to DC until six or seven at night.
This seems like torture to me.
So Katie and I will drive for 2 1/2 hours, fly for a few hours and get to DC at 2:00.

Makes sense to me. Which would you rather do?

I heart non-stop flights.

Here is something super fun, one of the attendees of the workshop I am teaching is a woman I met here on the blog a little over a year ago.
Her name is Chery and she leaves wonderful comments often. We have many things in common and have formed a nice sweet bond. She is a devoted wife and mother who is traveling a road she never imagined. I think we encourage one another.

Because we are both arriving at Dulles within a few hours of one another, Cheryl and Katie and I will drive to Angie's (the hostess) together. This is fantastic for a few reasons; Angie doesn't have to make the drive as she is busy preparing for the workshop and is great with child and I get to meet Cheryl early! Super fun!

Here is Cheryl's blog. She is writing more and more and I know you will enjoy her stories and her great pictures.

I must leave one decent picture to look at on the blog while I am gone...let's see...
Oh!

I almost forgot. I entered a picture in a magazine cover contest.

You can vote if you like. Go see what picture I chose.

cottage cheese.

cottage cheese reminds me of my mother.
cottage cheese reminds me of being on a diet in the 70's.
cottage cheese reminds me of my husband. When we go out to a restaurant
if the salad bar or the kitchen has cottage cheese, he is very happy.
We always have cottage cheese in our house.

My mom made a pretty side dish for us when we were little.
She placed lettuce on the plate and put cottage cheese in the middle. She nestled peaches around the cottage
cheese and put a cherry on top.

That was my mother.

Making pretty, healthy food for her family.
She was a good mom.

She never compared us to one another.
She judged our diving contests and diving board fashion shows.
She grew beautiful roses.
She liked to read.

She read The Summer of 42.
Someone at school said it was a spicy story.
I tried to find it.
She must have thrown it out.

She didn't take the garbage out often enough and our dad would yell when he got home,
"Why can't anyone take the garbage out?"
My husband says the same thing.
And so does Matthew.

We Glyman girls don't do garbage.

Which is interesting because,
my great grandfather on my mother's side, owned a garbage company.

It must be men's work.

We girls are in charge of the pretty food.

Fishy, Fishy in the brook

mama fry him in a pan
baby eat him like a man

Seems I am a victim of ....gender roles.
That's okay.

We all die for a chance to say this around here....

I want to encourage you when you are shooting in the full sun.
Remember it can be done.
Set your camera up to work the best in bright sun. Test shoot.
Remember shadows on the face are usually unflattering.
Notice this.
That's why I'm always shooting with the sun behind my person or shooting in a little shade.

Notice how the Kaisers snapped their pictures in the bright, bright sun.

I learn so much by looking and noticing.

and now I want to put on my wide lens.

In which our young character is showing off in school.

In the book I am reading Paloma is describing how she loves grammar and
she is describing how stupid her teacher is. She is arrogant and I don't like that
quality in a person. Paloma does come up with some valuable thoughts and ideas. Not
just boasting.

"And on the way home I thought: pity the poor in spirit who know neither the enchantment nor the beauty of language."

And I thought.

I pity the fool.

Because like Fezzik and his rhymes, I have lines from television and movies that pop into my brain.

I suppose if I were saturated with Bible verses, Bible verses would pop into my brain.
Well, in my defense, just this weekend, Emma was talking about Joy....and I said almost exactly like
Christopher Walken, The joy. of the Lord. is my strength.

It came out all choppy and funny and we laughed and laughed at my delivery of the scripture.

Not as smooth as my 'I pity the fool.'

I don't mind if people are smarter than me.
Most people are.

And furthermore I don't pity the person who doesn't get it.
They don't know they don't get it and they are usually just happy as clams.

Amen.

I am reading a book called The Elegance of the Hedgehog.
I bought it because it had a cute cover which I had seen on the shelves at various
bookstores for over a year. The book has scads of glowing reviews.
The premise is intriguing.

Chubby autodidact hides her intellegence while 12 year old girl hides her smarts and plans to kill herself.
Japanese man enters the picture and .....

I don't know what happens yet.

Here's the deal. I think the author is showing off.

Do you remember the chapter in Beloved where you do not know what is going on for about four pages?
I've already read a few chapters like this in this book.
Perhaps this is a writing technique to show just how smart the characters are. I suppose that's it.
Well. She got her point across but it is very unpleasant to read, for me at least.

I would prefer a good parts version of this story.

Because, believe it or not, I have finally reached a good part on page 129.

The young girl is journaling again and for once she says something I wanted to listen to; it was her profound thought no. 8.

This reading is for my sisters and friends who grew up listening to me read aloud.
Tomorrow I shall read from Seventeenth Summer when Angie and Jack share their first kiss on the third date on a dew covered hill at the golf course.
(and if I was in charge of Hollywood, I would make Seventeenth Summer into a movie. Bare toes in the garden and all.)

It's been a long time coming....but the reading aloud has arrived at Quiet Life.
It's my personal Everest.

Songs to lift your spirits on this April day.

It's Spring Break and Katie has her play on Saturday so we are not going anywhere far away due to
play practice. Life as we know it. BUT we are dashing off to Appleton today to
visit Carrie and Amy J. (Unless the snow keeps snowing and blowing and piling up. Then we may be force to stay home.)

BUT I come with cheer and bright happy tunes today.

A new tutorial I wrote for The Pioneer Woman is up this morning, so that might be fun to check out too.

Yesterday this song came on the radio. I knew I had heard it once or twice before.
My mind took me to Matthew...and then I remembered.

This is Matthew's favorite new group.

Mumford and Sons.

I LOVE the ending.

The following song lifts my spirits too...and so do Matilda and Miss Honey.

Perhaps Asher would like to call me Miss Honey. I love her.

We (the collective family We) are all thinking of Sue this week. She died on April 24th last year.
A whole year. It can't' be. But it is.

We loved to sing to records in the living room.
Funny Girl was a big favorite.

While I don't know any words to the songs I listen to now....
I know every single word from this record.

This one's for Sue.
She loved Barbra!

Miss you.

I watched a movie on Saturday as the snow came down...

I thought, I should write a movie if this bore-fest can get made. The movie was called, um,
what was it called?? Oh! "How do you know?"
This movie starred four excellent actors: Reece Witherspoon, Jack Nicolson, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson.
And the kicker...James L. Brooks was the writer and the director.

Here is the thing, I just sat there and wondered why would these actors agree to be in the
dull, unfunny movie. Why would anyone MAKE this dull, unfunny movie.

That is when I spotted James L. Brooks' name attatched to the project.

James L. Brooks is behind many of my very favorite movies/shows.

Let's start with genius; Broadcast News and Terms of Endearment. He wrote them both!!!
Then there was As Good as it Gets; spectacular.

The Simpsons, Taxi, Mary Tyler Moore, The Andy Griffith Show. The best of television humor and story.

I just sat there thinking, it must be the writing, the writing is just bad, the acting is not so bad.

So the movie got made because James L. Brooks was behind it. I would probably trust him too.

Forget this movie. Rent Broadcast News or Terms of Emdearment.
(Hey! Jack is in both of those movies. This explains why Jack is in How do You Know.

But really if you haven't seen either of those movies, put then on your list today.
The writing is spectacular and the characters are engaging. I have the lines floating around my brain from these movies and they are a part of my
fiber. The character Albert Brooks plays is up there with the most perfectly written characters I know of. It is just brilliant.

And then there is Aurora and Emma and Flap and Garret the Astronaut in Terms of Endearment.
This movie will make you laugh till you weeze and then it will make you cry all of your tears.

So there. James L. Brooks.
I guess he is human, like the rest of us.

Go and find one of his gems to watch.

And on Sunday the sun shone so pretty and the grass sparkled mostly green.
Katie ran from softball tryouts to play practice, I watched Ally McBeal and the last half hour of Now Voyager.

I told her she could just lie on a blanket in the sun.

Last night I heard a song for the first time, it was called Nature Boy and it was sung
by Casey Abrams on American Idol.

The whole circumstance was surreal.

First of all Casey sang the song in the most jazzy of jazz styles.
A style that I kind of hate.

But the control that this boy has over his voice, the wonderful way he is able to hit just the right note is
remarkable. He does something very interesting to me, he picks an odd ball note, a note you wouldn't
ever think to sing, a note your ear is not ready to hear. But he picks that note and sings that note and I
have to say he is a bit of a genius.

Since I know nothing of jazz, perhaps this what all jazz singers do. But it's all new to me and for some reason
I delight in listening to this young boy with his perfect pitch and sweet voice.
He is a musician.

But part of the surreal thing is...Steven Tyler, who is standing and clapping, says his mother sang this song to him all the time when he was a little boy. As far as Steven Tyler goes...that explains everything. LOL ;o)

There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy
And sad of eye
But very wise
Was he

And then one day
A magic day he came my way
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
This he said to me
"The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return"

Pia.

Three things about American Idol.

1. The judges are partly responsible for a talented performer going home.
Since they think everyone is fabulous, they are not giving the voters any help in the elimination process.

2. It has always been a popularity contest. Pia is not a popular girl. She is beautiful and talented.
But not popular.

3. Voters need to be excited to vote. Paul is not nearly as talented as Pia, but I
voted for him this week because his song was passionately upbeat and fun. Pia was eh.

And that is why they pay me the big bucks.

I think this will be the strangest post I have ever written.

Hide yo kids.
Hide yo wife.

It is going to be strange because I am going to tell you some strange happenings that I don't generally
believe in. I don't believe in horoscopes. I don't believe in ghosts. I don't believe in speaking with the dead.
I stay very clear of anything occultish.

I do believe in angels tho.
I'm not sure how much interaction we have with them...but the Bible says there are angels so I believe it is true.

Lately, I have been smelling smoke.
My husband smokes outside in our garage. He never smokes in the house.
But the strange thing is I will smell smoke in the middle of the day or night,
when he not smoking and sometimes not even at home.

I smell it when the furnace is not on. So I don't think fumes are blowing from somewhere.
I asked him if he had been smoking in the basement and he says absolutely not.

So. Where is the smoke coming from? It could be my mom and dad.
Now, I know this is unusual but my sister Janice told a story a few years ago of a time in her life when
she was going thru a particularly difficult time. She smelled smoke. After months of trying to figure it out,
she surmised that the smoke was mom and dad coming along side her to give her so support.
After Janice's life turned a corner...the smoke was gone.

So just last night I posted to Janice that I thought mom and dad were visiting me.
She wondered if I was finding dimes? No. I'm not sure about the dimes but I told her I would keep a watch for them.

But something else happened and I didn't realize it until this morning on the way to school with Katie.

I told Katie that I heard an owl hoo, hoo, hooing when I went to bed.
She giggled at my hoo, hoo, hooing.

I then called out the owl call "who, who, who cooks for you."
And instantly I knew that the owl had been sent to me by Sue.

Susie was the owl whisperer.
Keith told me the story of he and Sue sitting on their deck in Missouri and Sue calling out to the owls,

"Who, Who, Who cooks for You?

And just like that, a big owl flew down from the trees, landed on the railing of their deck and turned it's head right around
and looked at Sue and Keith. She was the owl whisperer.

I am sad that I didn't call out my bedroom window after that owl last night and that I didn't realize it until this morning.
(I have only heard an owl perhaps three times at this house)

It's all a little psychic hotline for me.

I do believe there is a lot going on that we don't see.

Could it be their spirits coming to comfort me?
Warn me? (ew)
Just coming to visit?
Enjoying Dances with the Stars with me?

I think I need to ask God to make them go away if they are not friendly spirits.
I don't feel a sense of dread which is a good thing. I just feel curious, confused and slightly
nutty. I do not find it comforting. I just don't know.

Amy Grant says the angels are watching over me and on that,
I rest my case :o)

What do you think of this sort of thing happening?
Be nice to me. I'm fragile.

I absolutely adore it! I think she did a fantastic job designing it. She used Tiny Prints.
Wonderful color and paper quality. It made my day!
Pretty cute picture too :o)

I'm planning on adding a mini session to my session choices for my photography business this year.
I'm not sure if they will be on specific days only or clients choice. I will definitely bundle it with a 8 x 10....or perhaps an 11 x 14.
It will only be 1/2 hour shoot.
Still thinking about this one.

I also want to think of a way to encourage parents/clients to buy something large.

Seriously I think under a 11 x 14 is tiny. I need to think of a way of encouraging this.
I don't want to do this to make more money. I just really want them to have a nice big print or two or three of
their session. I'm afraid the digital files and 5 x 7 get tossed in a drawer.

Perhaps a deal for 11 x 14's. Something like that.

Do you ever print your pictures larger than a 4 x 6?
Do you always put pictures in frames?

The thing I like about 11 x 14 is that I mount them on something hard and they can stand up without a frame....and then I just set them on top of things. Framing and hanging is another thing, isn't it?

I also like the big canvases cause them come the nice hanging wires already...and all I need is a nail.
(Which is also a tricky situation around here. Where do all the nails go? )

Anyway,
I'd be happy to hear your opinions on picture sizes and framing and whether you put your pictures in albums?

Awake, thou wintry earth -
Fling off thy sadness!
Fair vernal flowers, laugh forth
Your ancient gladness!

Saturday, April 02, 2011

I hope you all survived the very bad terrible holiday called April fools day.

We had huge flakes of snow and that was pretty crazy but our radio station
was trying to be funny and they pretended it was Saturday. The good thing about this is
on Saturday they play 70's music.
I felt like it was the best April Fools trick in the world...cause it made me super happy
every time I got in the car.

Al Green and Barry White never fail to make me happy.

So thank you Magic 98

(Karen, you must show Chuck :o)

Off to drink my Iced Chai.
yum.

We rented The Fighter and will watch that some time today.
All of my teams are out of the running for the Final Four....so I hardly care.
The sun is shining like crazy. I finished the Idita-walk.
Katie is having a sleepover tonight.

That is all I know or as that lady on television used to say,

And so it goes.

Happy weekend!
